“O” Antiphons for the seven days before Christmas

Today marks the beginning of the “O” Antiphons, which are sung during the Church’s solemn hour of prayers (Vespers) for the 7 days leading up to the coming of the baby Jesus.

Let us join in the Prayer of the Church, and also reflect on our need for PRUDENCE (Latin: to see/look ahead) – both in practical decisions in our daily lives, and in our yearning for the happiness of heaven!

The Antiphons have been around since the eighth century, when monks linked together figures from the Old Testament that looked forward to the coming of our salvation. We still sing these today, a thousand years later! #GottaloveHisStory

December 17 – “O Sapientia”
“O Wisdom, Who didst come out of the mouth of the Most High, reaching from end to end
and ordering all things mightily and sweetly:
come and teach us the way of prudence.//
“O Sapientia, quae ex ore Altissimi prodiisti,
attingens a fine usque ad finem,
fortiter suaviterque disponens omnia:
veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiae.”
